General Summary

We’re looking for an experienced copywriter who can do more than write clean product blurbs. This role calls for a strategic storyteller, creative chameleon, and someone who can flex across multiple tones, adapt to different audiences, and bring every one of our brands to life with clarity, originality, and speed.

As an expanding multi-brand platform, we operate like an internal agency serving surf, outdoor, and lifestyle brands across multiple industries. That means shifting perspective depending on the brief: surf heritage one day, rugged outdoor the next, youth-focused campaign the day after. The right candidate can pivot seamlessly, understand segmentation, and create copy that cuts through for diverse consumer groups.

You’ll partner closely with creative, marketing, and ecommerce to amplify stories at every touch point from web and email to retail, paid media, blog, editorial, SMS, and push. This is a hands-on role with room to lead, innovate, and shape how our brands communicate to the world. You’re a thought partner with the creative director, not an order taker.

Essential Job Functions

  • Write copy across three main surf brands: O'Neill, Hang Ten, and Lightning Bolt (along with Mountain Khaki and Voyager Goods)
  • Own the editorial calendar for store features, blog content, and SEO articles
  • Develop and iterate on brand storytelling frameworks (heritage, athlete stories, store guides)
  • Collaborate with designers and performance marketers to craft headline/copy systems for campaigns
  • Contribute to optimizing the ecommerce experience with better brand storytelling, voice, and hierarchy
  • Product descriptions requiring SEO familiarity (our toolset is SEM Rush)
  • Use AI tools responsibly to increase efficiency, not replace creative thinking
  • Own the copy function. Lead it. Evolve it. Measure it.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Exceptional storytelling skills with a strong instinct for brand voice, SEO, and performance marketing.
  • Ability to craft persuasive, authentic, and consistent copy across platforms
  • Deep knowledge of, or genuine passion for, surf and outdoor culture, with the curiosity and drive to learn quickly
  • Proficiency with AI content tools, with the ability to leverage them effectively while maintaining authenticity and originality
  • Strong initiative and collaboration skills — proactive in asking questions, offering solutions, and pushing creative boundaries
  • Ability to balance speed and quality, delivering high-impact content in a fast-paced environment

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, English, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional copywriting or brand content experience, ideally within DTC, lifestyle, or apparel brands

Success in this Role Looks Like

  • Developing copy that is persuasive, consistent, and grounded in our brand point of view
  • Building and maintaining a content engine that supports SEO and delivers stories that matter to our community
  • Establishing and evolving a clear, recognizable brand voice across all platforms
  • Acting as a true creative partner in the room — not just a task-taker — by contributing ideas, showing initiative, and driving projects forward
